Rossini was a prolific composer of opera, producing 39 by the age of 37, at which point he retired! The Italian Girl in Algiers is a madcap story with a Rossini trademark overture, full of catchy melodies and the composer's playful humour.
Schumann's Cello Concerto was one of two major works composed in a mood of optimism after he moved to Dusseldorf to take up the post of Music Director with the city's Orchestra. Schumann had a strong connection to the singing, dreamy qualities of the cello and as a result, the work is full of soaring, eloquent melodies. Tonight's soloist is the new Principal Cellist of the Ulster Orchestra, Charles-Antoine Archambault.
Composed when Schubert was just 17, Symphony No.2 marks the start of the composer stepping out from the shadow of his Viennese predecessors, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Schubert's capacity for innovation is very clear in a work that veers from the graceful to the playful, brimming with effervescence and building up to an exciting and energetic climatic end.
