It's Easy Street Pickings at the Playhouse

Local band release their debut EP 'Brown'

Well, they say things come in threes and this Friday at The Playhouse is testament to that.

Three releases in the form of an EP from Oisín ó Scolaí & The Virginia Slims, an EP from The Easy Street Pickings and a single release from John Ross all under one roof and presented by Super Native Records.

We caught up with Oisín ó Scolaí earlier this month for a chat about his own single and EP release which you can read here, but now we turn our attention to another act on the bill, The Easy Street Pickings who consist of songwriter Oisín Magee on vocals and guitar, Cathal Mercer also on vocals, Conchúr Mac Diarmada on percussion,  Ryan Rodgers playing lead guitar and Damien Walsh on Bass.

Who are the Easy Street Pickings?
Easy Street Pickings are a band based in Derry who play original folk tunes as well as the odd cover to keep things interesting.

Where does the band name come from?
It just came to us one day to be honest but sure, who doesn't want to be on Easy Street?

Your debut EP ‘Brown’ is being released this Friday, tell us about the EP and what the tracks are about…
The EP is a collection of ambient and some upbeat original tracks and will also have our first single 'Signs' featured which can be found on our Facebook page if anyone wants a wee taster.

Tell us something totally random about The Easy Street Pickings…
The Easy Street Pickings have members from 3 different counties in Ireland: Armagh, Donegal and Derry.

How did you find the process of recording your first EP?
It was both stressful and enjoyable. Oisín Ó Scolaí was a pleasure to work with and produced a really nice finished product.

What’s up next for the Easy Street Pickings?
We've a few gigs coming up such as the EP Launch in the Playhouse Theatre on Friday night. Oisin is also going to Dylanfest at Moville in a few weeks, so busy times ahead.

For those who can’t make it on Friday, where can they grab the new EP?
If they want a physical copy they can contact us directly via Facebook but it will be available on Band camp, Spotify and ITunes shortly.

‘Brown’ will be released on May 27th at the Playhouse Theatre and you can keep up-to-date with the guys via Facebook and Bandcamp. Photo credit Shauna Marie Crawford
