Local recruits from the Bogside, Fountain and Bishop Street join Playhouse production

Local people recruited from the Bogside, Fountain and Bishop Street have joined the production team at The Playhouse for its new production for 2018.

The enthusiastic local team, made up of individuals interested in theatre performance and backstage skills, have been working on all aspects of The Playhouse production of ‘The Bog Couple’, including set design, stage management, lighting & sound, directing and performing.

They will gain vital experience and training in theatre performance and backstage skills, working with industry professionals, undertake masterclasses with industry standard technicians, performers, directors and writers, and be part of a team delivering all aspects of a high quality professional stage play.

A series of readings, performances and workshops will be held in each of the Bogside, Fountain and Bishop Street areas to ensure maximum reach of the play to the local community.

Set in the Rossville Flats in the Bogside in 1976, ‘The Bog Couple’ (inspired by Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple) is a brand new laugh out loud comedy, which will premiere at The Playhouse from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 February 2018.

Starring local actors Pat Lunch and Gerry Doherty, The Playhouse production introduces us to Oscar Meenan and Felix Young –both “Bogside men” - one a Catholic and one a Protestant; one is an easy-going, slob and one an obsessive perfectionist preoccupied with neatness.

Fate and a couple of failed marriages have crashed the two men together under the same roof in the Rossville Flats in the midst of The Troubles - in what can only be described as the mismatch of the century.

The project to give vital backstage experience to members of the community is funded by the Urban Villages Initiative, a key action within the Northern Ireland Executive’s Together: Building a United Community (TBUC) Strategy.

“We’re just delighted to have this wonderful company of dedicated and curious recruits, they are getting stuck in, and they have dirt under their fingernails” Director Kieran Griffiths said.

“We hope you join them in the Bogside in 1976 to find out how they have helped us tell the story of that ways in which true friendship can overcome all in this riotous study in bitter-sweet disharmony!”

Written by Dr Liam Campbell and directed by Kieran Griffiths, The Playhouse production of ‘The Bog Couple’ will premiere at The Playhouse from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 February 2018 (matinee performance 3pm Sunday 18 February). Tickets are £10. To book (028)71268027 or www.derryplayhouse.co.uk.
