Spring Tides nominated for international music gong

The Donegal band are up for ‘Balcony TV Music Video Award 2017’

Donegal rowdy folk hop'n'roll band Spring Tides have been nominated for Balcony TV’s international gong, ‘Music Video Award 2017’.

Making a shortlist of twelve acts from the US to Israel, the Donegal band are the only Irish act to make the shortlist and with past winners consisting of Mumford and Sons and The Script, the guys are in good company.

Spring Tides, made up of James O’Donnell, Gerard McMonagle, Sean McGranaghan and Cathal Kelly, took the long road to Cork in November of last year but it didn’t take long for the energetic four-piece to make their mark. There were accolades galore as they were made the ‘Christmas Day video 2016’ and also ‘Balcony TV’s Editors Pick of the Month’.

Lead singer James O’Donnell told us how the trip came about. “We initially got invited down to perform in May of last year, but between work et cetera, we weren't able to get down till November. I flew in from London and the rest of the guys drove down from Donegal so everyone was wrecked but buzzing.

“It was great craic though. There were actually another three acts there to record their video as well.”

The track in question was Harry Haller, a rowdy upbeat energetic track that has since been released as a single and has proved to be a great success for the band. “The reaction has been really positive” said James.

“Highland Radio have been promoting it as well as a couple of other stations. We've been using it as the closer for our live sets since last summer and that’s really when it comes into its own.”

So performing the track on a balcony in the middle of the Cork must be one of the strangest places the track has been blasted out? “Definitely not” said James.

“I remember playing to a couple of people sitting in the boot of their car in a field immediately after we got off stage at Electric Picnic. We love playing that song so we tend to play it at the drop of a hat.”

James told us how the Donegal band heard about their nomination. “We received an email from the editor of Balcony TV last Monday night saying we were up for the award. We were the Christmas Day video last year and that made video of the week then the editors pick of the month for the whole of Balcony TV so as far as we can tell that’s what got us into the final twelve.

“We will also be appearing on a compilation released on iTunes and Spotify in the next couple weeks.”

It's a big international poll consisting of fantastic acts from Miami to Tel Aviv so the band are well chuffed to be in the mix. “To be nominated is a huge thing for us but we'd love to add our name to the list of past winners with the likes of Mumford and Sons and The Script. It’s also a massive lift ahead of the release of our next EP” said James.

“We'll be releasing the Sun Sessions EP in the middle of June and touring in support of that so to pick up an award before all that would be amazing.

“Balcony TV released nearly 2000 videos in 100 cities around the world last year so to make it to the final 12 is great but from this point on we're relying on our home support to carry us through and so far they've been amazing. Voting closes 6th of June and people can vote daily until then!”

You’ve heard it, voting closes early next month so let’s get behind the guys and help them bring home the title of ‘Balcony TV’s Music Video 2017’. You can register your vote here.
